Oddly enough, it seems as though the real fallout of R. Kelly’s ‘alleged’ actions have just begun. After successfully prolonging the trial of his child-pornography charges for more than 5 years, Kelly’s not-guilty verdict has provoked feelings of confusion, happiness, and dissappointment.
I’d be the first one to tell you that as far as an ‘artist’, R. Kelly should be revered as one of the most talented artists in my generation. But here’s where the buck comes to a screeching halt…I have a beautiful daughter who is very near and dear to my heart. Needless to say, like many other parents, I have had a major concern about his notorious dealings with minors. With that being said, popular culture seems to have been okay with it.
While awaiting the trial, we’ve bought his albums, seen him in concert, and of course jammed to the many guest appearances he’s made on remixes. In 2004, I can even recall the NAACP rewarding Kelly with an Image Award.
Recently, Dr. William Jelani Cobb, an author and history professor at Spelman College has decided to take action against Kelly. Cobb is circulating a petition called: Statement of Black Men Against the Exploitation of Black Women.
In the petition, Cobb suggests that Black Men must step up and become protectors of Black Women.
“This is about more than R. Kelly’s claims to innocence. It is about our survival as a community. Until we believe that our daughters, sisters, mothers, wives and friends are worthy of justice, until we believe that rape, domestic violence and the casual sexism that permeates our culture are absolutely unacceptable, until we recognize that the first priority of any community is the protection of its young, we will remain in this tragic dead-end.”
My question to you is…is this petition too little, too late? Or do you feel it’s about time Cobb, and Black Men, take a stand on what seems to be widely tolerated. Most of us should be able to appreciate the gesture at least.
Your thoughts…

I’m so glad that another human being has stood up and seen the perversion that our society promotes. R. Kelly is a shame to black men and all men regardless of their race. The women was made as a help meet for her husband and not to be exploited for perverted pleasures. Their is nothing good about what kind of perverted things that he is into. Its a shame a talented gift of singing he has ; has gone to the kingdom of darkness to aid in destroying our future generations. Plainly put, he should have been sentenced to prison for messing with underage girls.
I can appreciate the gesture of the petition, but I wonder why Dr. Cobb felt so compelled to do this only after R. Kelly’s verdict. Was he not listening to the lyrics of certain hip-hop/rap artists during the 5 years it took Kelly’s case to come to trial? Was he unaware of the Genarlow Wilson case, that drew national attention because of the unjust sentence that he was originally given, and NOT because he videotaped himself recieving oral sex from a classmate? As a professor at a college for African American women, is he unaware of the fact that about 60% of African American children are being raised by single mothers, who are left to raise their child/children alone after the “fathers” decided parenthood would crimp their style?
A petition.
Most likely to be signed by men who would not be so inclined to videotape their sexual exploits in the first place.
I guess it’s a start, but I’m not concerned about R. Kelly. Although rumors abound, I don’t know what Mr. Kelly does in his bedroom or with whom. I DO know what I hear on the radio(Supaman dat ho). I DO know how Black women are too often portrayed in the media (Flavor of Love). I DO know how D.L. Hughley joked after Don Imus’ comments about the Rutger’s women’s basketball team. These things occurred before Mr. Kelly’s verdict came in, and I don’t recall there being a national petition then!
Where is this petition? Who’s supposed to sign it? How many signatures are expected and what happens after it’s been signed? Like I said, I guess it’s a start, but I think we need much more than symbolic gestures at this point. We need discussion. We need to be in agreement, as a community, that the exploitation and objectification of Black women will not be tolerated. We need to use our collective power to stop the misogynistic lyrics in music and stop making movies like “Soul Plane” more successful at the box office than “Akeelah and the Bee”. We need to teach our young men that being respecful is not being “soft”.
But more than anything, we need our men to help raise our children.
I heard that oprah winfrey is paying this guy from Spelman to hurt another black man. She is a man hater. These lesbians want to destroy all men. They want a man free planet. Women who love men and d88k better make a stand against them and NOW!
I agree janet. Man haters are trying to rid this world of men. They are taking over.
“These lesbians”? I’m afraid you lost me there.
Men love women. Lesbians love women. Aren’t they in competition for the attention of women? Go to a club these days, and watch them try to compete with men for the attention of women. They hate men with a passion. That’s why you see so many REAL HIGHLY SEXUAL men being accused of being sex addicts, rapist and child molesters these days. If they can get all the men locked up women will turn to each other. Makes sense to me. If you love men, you better stand with them against the man haters.
I second that emotion Janet. These lesbians are so bold these days.
Instead of attacking an american black man who has only improved the life of american women, you should be discussing atrocities like the one below:
Lisa Raye married the King of the Cow Pastor, AKA Premier Misick, right in the height of Terri McMillan’s revelation that she was so voodooed she couldn’t recognize a gay man for more than 10 years. EVERYONE who has any experience with island american-hating users, knew she’d end up just like Terri or worse. Their jealousy of americans leads them to make a farce out of marriage, and not only that, to destroy the spouse victim.
Americans need to wake up and understand that all black people are not our people. How many women do we need to have destroyed to WAKE UP, to american haters, who pretend to love only for profit. He married her to ONLY attract hollywood money to that pathetic island, controlled by white britains, who really have the power.
And he married her to get whatever money she had! Fancy titles don’t always equate to money. He REALLY wanted oprah’s money, but apparently she has people around her to protect her better than Lisa.
Every time one of these caribbean low lifes destroys a black american woman in the public eye, they do something drastic to restore their image. That was another reason he married Lisa in such a BIG TV splash. Black americans spend a lot of money down in that caribbean, AND WE SHOULD BE BOYCOTTING THEM FOR CRIMES AGAINST BLACK AMERICAN WOMEN. IF WE STOP GOING THERE SPENDING OUR MONEY, THEY WON’T HAVE THE MEANS TO COME TO THE STATES TO VICTIMIZE US WITH LOVE AND GREENCARDS SCAMS.
Lisa’s only crime was letting him encourage her to get on TV to encourage other black american women to come down there to be victimized. For that she is going to pay a heavy price. He never had anything, so she’ll get nothing, and since he is a lawyer on his home turf with american haters, they’ll make sure not only do they get all her money, but her health, career, and happiness as well. THAT MY FRIEND IS PURE EVIL IN ITS WORST FORM.
Its a shame that her best friends Duane and Tisha even had their reputations tarnised by american haters. Jasmine Guy apparently sufferd as well. When evil haters are in your life, you have no way to go but down.
It is possible that Lisa can recover to some extent, but she’ll never be the same. Chelation therapy could possibly get the voodoo out of her bloodstream and restore her nerves/mental health. She’ll need a lot of support.
I wish you would consider discussing this important issue. Black women are being destroyed, and some black men. These are human rights violations that need to be voiced and addressed, and not ignored for the sake of appearing to have a black unity that doesn’t exist. Every one seems to be in touch with this reality except black americans and it is putting us at a disadvantage, and conributing to the destruction of black american women.
